New President puts “food security is national security” at the heart of a shared industry agenda
Tom Finn, CEO of Kepak Meat Division UK, has been appointed President of the British Meat Processors Association (BMPA) for a two-year term.
Succeeding Tom Kirwan of ABP, who steps down after four years as President, having strengthened the association’s voice and championed the interests of the British meat industry.”
Announced at BMPA’s Annual General Meeting, Tom Finn’s appointment will build on that work, with a focus on advancing the sector’s priorities and strengthening collaboration across the food supply chain.
Tom Finn has spent 30 years with Kepak in operational and commercial roles and was appointed CEO of Kepak Meat Division UK in 2024. From a farming background, he brings extensive experience across the beef and lamb supply chain.
His presidency will focus on supporting a resilient, competitive food system, underpinned by the recognition that food security is national security and that farmers, processors and retailers are connected parts of essential national infrastructure.
Commenting on his appointment, Tom Finn said:
“It is a real privilege to take on the role of BMPA President. I would like to pay particular tribute to Tom Kirwan, whose leadership and commitment over the past four years have strengthened BMPA’s voice and standing. He leaves a strong foundation for us to build on.”
“Food security is national security. From livestock farmers through to processors and retailers, we are one connected supply chain. Profitable farming, a competitive processing sector and a reliable supply of high-quality food for consumers are inseparable.”
“Working with industry and Government, we need to create the conditions for long-term investment, greater productivity and confidence in British food production. I look forward to playing my part as we build on the progress already made and make the case for our industry’s contribution to the country’s security, economy and rural communities.”
BMPA Chief Executive John Powell said:
“We are delighted to welcome Tom Finn as President of BMPA. His experience and understanding of the whole supply chain will be invaluable as we continue to build relationships across the supply chain, elaborate our new vision and strategy for the coming 3-5 years with members, and take forward our work with Government.”
“We also owe a considerable debt of thanks to Tom Kirwan for his leadership over the past four years. Building on that foundation, our focus is on making practical progress with the challenges the industry is facing: securing livestock supply, improving competitiveness and creating the conditions for investment. Tom Finn’s collaborative approach will help us bring the industry together around those shared priorities.”
Outgoing President Tom Kirwan said:
“It has been a privilege to serve as BMPA President over the past four years. I would like to thank our members and the BMPA team for their support, hard work and commitment throughout that time.”
“I am delighted to hand over to Tom Finn, who understands the industry from farming through to processing and the customer. He brings valuable experience and a strong collaborative approach, and I wish him and BMPA every success.”
BMPA is developing a new three-to-five-year strategy shaped by its members, alongside its engagement with Government on food security, trade, regulation and future livestock policy.
Tom Finn’s presidency will support this work, helping to strengthen the industry’s collective voice and the resilience of the supply chain from farm to shelf.
