Kepak is proud to support the launch of the Catchment Action Plan, a flagship initiative within the national Better Farming for Water Campaign, aimed at accelerating impactful on‑farm actions that protect and enhance Ireland’s water quality.
A Priority Catchment with a Proud Legacy
The River Boyne is one of eight EPA-priority catchments of concern, alongside the Slaney, Barrow, Nore, Suir, Blackwater, Lee and Bandon–Ilen. Tailored workplans for each catchment will drive targeted water quality improvements within defined timelines.
Stretching 112 kilometres from its source in Carbury, Co. Kildare, and supported by 114 tributaries and over 300 kilometres of rivers and streams, the Boyne Catchment spans 2,700 km² (650,000 acres). Generations of farming families have shaped and safeguarded this unique landscape and its cultural heritage.
A Collaborative Effort to Drive Real Change
The Catchment Implementation Group—chaired by John Horgan, former CEO of Kepak Group—brings together farmers and key partners from Teagasc, Agri‑Food industries, ACA, LAWPRO, county councils and the wider community. A dedicated Teagasc Catchment Coordinator will lead delivery on the ground.
The plan outlines Eight Actions for Change, addressing nutrient management, farmyard enhancements and land management improvements that will significantly contribute to better water outcomes.
Leadership Voices on the Importance of the Plan
Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon T.D., highlighted the urgency of collective action:
“Water quality is a necessary deciding factor in the continued success and future ambition of our Agri‑Food sector. No part of the industry is immune from the impacts of declining water quality, and no one sector can be immune from acting. The Catchment Action Plan is a powerful example of collaboration and will support Ireland in securing a further nitrates derogation that is vital to farmers and to Ireland’s dairy, drystock and tillage sectors.”
Professor Frank O’Mara, Director of Teagasc, acknowledged the strength of partnership behind the initiative:
“I wish to express my appreciation to colleagues in Teagasc and the members of the Oversight Committee for their expertise and commitment. I wish everyone involved every success in delivering the ambitious targets outlined in this comprehensive plan.”
John Horgan, Chairman of the Implementation Group and former CEO of Kepak, reflected on the programme’s significance:
“This is more than a water initiative — it’s a commitment to future generations. With Kepak working as industry lead under the Better Farming for Water programme, we can protect our waterways while unlocking their potential for sustainable farming, community life and lasting legacy.”
Jim Bergin, Chair of the Better Farming for Water Stakeholder Steering Group, underscored the sector’s adaptability:
“Irish farmers have shown great resilience in adapting to a changing business environment. I look forward to them leading the way in improving water quality for their families and communities across the North East.”
