What is your name and your title?

Maria Hester – Procurement Assistant

Describe your role with Kepak?

I work closely with Kepak’s group livestock manager on procurement and agri-initiatives. Once they’re in place I then take on the management of these initiatives. My role also involves a level of event management, I organise the farm walks on Kepak farm and I’m part of the team responsible for putting together our presence at the National Ploughing Championships.

Tell us about a typical day in your shoes?

A lot of my time can be spent planning our supply and providing support to our procurement team on various requests. I’m also working on several projects with external bodies like Irish Hereford Prime, Animal Health Ireland or Agri Aware. When I’m not doing that, you’ll find me organising a variety of agriculture events we run throughout the year.

What do you love most about working for Kepak?

I love the varied nature of my role; I know it’s probably a cliché but no two days are the same. I love working on the National Ploughing Championship. I really enjoy being part of the Certified Irish Angus Beef school’s competition, where we get the opportunity to encourage school kids to consider a future in the agriculture industry.

What is Kepak doing to innovate in agriculture?

I think the Twenty20 Beef club which we launched last year was one of the biggest innovations in the sector for some time. We are working with other leading agri-industry players to implement a more sustainable beef production model. Scheme’s like the Twenty20 beef club demonstrate the innovative thinking needed to bring the industry into the future and it’s great to see Kepak leading on this.
